Handwriting

At Hayfield, handwriting is taught once a week through discrete handwriting lessons following PenPals for Handwriting, these skills are then practiced throughout the week during other lessons. 

Pupils work through the programme, learning to produce single letter formation before beginning cursive letter formation at stage 8. 

Once working at stage 6, pupils begin to learn how to write letters on the line with the correct ascending and descending formation. This is taught using these terms to help pupils remember:

Pupils are supported as a whole class by the Shine team to take part in activities to warm up our hands before we write. This can be through different approaches, such as fine motor activities and theraputty games, including dough disco:
